SHAUN TAN'S - 'THE ARRIVAL'
Before we delve into the text, use the image below to compose an insightful paragraph in your workbook on what you believe the text is about and why. You will then share this with another person in the room and potentially the class, so don't be 'that' person and waste time.... GO!
Once, this is completed, your teacher will ask a few students to share their responses and the class will participate in a discussion. The discussion will revolve around -
- What the text is about
- How it links to protesting
- How these issues are significant in our society.

COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES ON SHAUN TAN'S - THE ARRIVAL
Complete the below comprehension activity on Shaun Tan's 'The Arrival.
EWWWW PEAL...
As a class we will be reviewing the writing structure of PEAL. This new and updated version of PEAL will enable you to enhance the clarity and depth of your writing.
Our focus will be: “Why do people protest?" by using ONE text we have studied so far to justify your response. Before we compose our own PEAL paragraph together, the class will deconstruct the question using PALS. You will then have the opportunity to compose your own. Remember: As we are focusing on the illustrations in the book, we will be using visual techniques for our examples. Language techniques must be utilised when only looking at written words or phrases. |
HOW DO I KNOW I'M SUCCESSFUL?
At times, we don't really know we are doing something right, until we compare it to something that we know is right. As a class, we will compose a success criteria that we need to achieve, in order to understand that we have compiled a GREAT piece of analytical writing. This will need to be written in your workbooks.
Once you have finished composing your PEAL paragraph, give your work to a friend or someone close by, to look at it in relation to the success criteria we co-constructed as a class. They will provide you with feedback as to what they believe you need to fix or work on. This feedback will then be applied to your work.
With the knowledge you have acquired throughout the term so far, you are now going to use one text you have studied and answer the following question:
'Evaluate how your allocated text evokes pity sorrow or empathy' You must use the updated PEAL writing structure and ensure you have at least FOUR examples in your response. Your teacher will assist you in unpacking the question and providing you with the essay structure they want you to follow. |
